Escher, Tessellations and Rogers High School

Ms Hope Chella’s Ceramic Class and Ms Mary Cousins Math Class and I joined forces at Rogers High School recently (January-May 2015) to create this Tessellations Mural.  62 students participated as we studied the work of Escher, the theory behind tessellations and  the clay process of sgraffitto.

After first creating a tessellating puzzle piece, repeating patterns were generated on paper and transferred onto buff clay which had first been prepared with three coats of rich black underglaze.
Removing the black areas with a sgraffitto carving tool revealed the patterned designs.
Student pride was evident as each came by to identify his or her tile, while we installed this 5’ x 5’ mural in the Math Wing at Rogers.  Math and Art combined to make a community mural!
